It draws everyone from presidents to pet lovers to some of the region's best chef-led restaurants; a vibrant arts culture, including the famous Torpedo Factory Art Center; a thriving boutique scene; numerous boat tours and water taxis; creative cocktails and craft beers, including Alexandria's Port City Brewing Company; and much more. Northern Virginia is also known as a country of horses. Obstacle courses, equestrian shows, polo matches, horseback riding at Marriott Ranch in Hume, trap shooting at Landsdowne in Leesburg—all these activities can be enjoyed here. In the 2004 presidential election, 53 percent of Northern Virginia voters voted for John Kerry, while 46 percent voted for George W. Bush. Northern Virginia has an extensive transportation infrastructure that includes major Ronald Reagan, Washington National, and Washington Dulles International airports; several lines of the Washington subway system; the Virginia Railway Express suburban train system; transit bus services; bike sharing and bike lanes and trails; and an extensive network of highways and interstate highways. The region's initial development occurred in its easternmost area, encompassing the modern counties of Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) was founded in 1957 as a regional organization of 22 local governments from the Washington area as well as area members from the Maryland and Virginia state legislatures. Northern Virginia offers a wide variety of homes with different locations and prices.

Stafford is one of seven counties in the United States where black households earn more than white households. Fairfax County was named after Thomas Fairfax, who was granted a land grant by King Charles II in 1649. Fifty counties in the western mountainous part of the state seceded from the Confederacy in 1863 to form West Virginia. The federal government is one of the main employers in Northern Virginia, with numerous government agencies located here, such as Central Intelligence Agency headquarters; Pentagon (headquarters of Department of Defense); Fort Myer; Fort Belvoir; Marine Corps Base at Quantico; FBI Academy; DEA Academy; Naval Criminal Investigation Service; United States Patent & Trademark Office; United States Geological Survey.
